Our thoughts on the largest comic convention in Central Florida. Anime, Demon Slayer voice actors, geek merch. Megacon 2023, held from March 30 to April 2, 2023, in Orlando, Florida, was a significant event for comic creators, offering a platform for various announcements, panels, and interactions with fans. Here’s a summary of the major events and highlights for comic creators:

  • Marvel’s “Fall of X” Panel: Marvel Comics held a notable panel discussing the upcoming era for the X-Men, titled “Fall of X.” Senior Editor Jordan D. White, along with writers Gerry Duggan, Benjamin Percy, and artist Joshua Cassara, unveiled new series, stories, and changes in the X-Men universe. This panel was a focal point for fans and creators interested in the future direction of one of Marvel’s flagship franchises.
  • DC Comics Announcements: DC revealed new projects at Megacon, including a new BATMAN & ROBIN series by Joshua Williamson and Simone Di Meo, and introduced the Robin Mobile. They also showcased previews of upcoming issues like JSA #4 and SUPERMAN #3, alongside a new Dawn of DC trailer, indicating significant developments in their comic lineup.
  • Creator Interaction and Panels: The event was rich with opportunities for comic creators to engage with fans. Panels like the one discussing the transition of Hellboy from comics to games, featuring Mike Mignola, highlighted how comic creators are expanding their universes into other media. Additionally, the presence of creators like Joshua Williamson, known for his work on Superman, and Frank Cho, among others, provided fans with direct access to insights and autographs.
  • Artist Alley and Independent Creators: Megacon was also a hub for independent creators and artists. The event’s Artist Alley was bustling with creators showcasing their work, from sketches to full comic runs, providing a platform for lesser-known artists to gain visibility. This aspect of Megacon underscores its role in supporting emerging talent in the comic industry.
  • Community and Fan Engagement: Beyond the formal panels, Megacon fostered a community spirit where creators like Eric July highlighted the crossover appeal and love from fans, emphasizing how events like these are not just about announcements but about community building within the comic and broader pop culture fandom.
  • Merchandising and Special Guests: The event included booths for merchandise, where creators could sell their work directly to fans. Special guests like those from Eddsworld and Tomska at the Creator Hub in Birmingham (part of a related event) showed how Megacon and similar conventions are becoming melting pots for various forms of content creators, not just traditional comic book artists and writers.
